VAUBAN'S / SÉRÉ-DE-RIVIÈRES' FORTIFICATIONS - TOUL

Toul is the only town in Lorraine to have preserved a city wall. It developed many shapes of fortifications : from antique bulwark of the IIIrd century was born a major renewed fortified town in front of the technique progress and the development of the town. New, unfinished enclosure with nine bastions and three gates.Until 1914 , 15 forts and works are part of the new rampart of Toul, a few kilometers of the old fortification. « La Porte de Metz » is the only surviving original Vauban gate. The watering gate built in the XVIIIth century, shows a valves system at the exit of Toul’ sewage. « La Porte Moselle », rebuilt in 1882, shows a proper decoration with fake machicoulis. « La Porte de France », less decorated, remains beautifully crafted. Finally, the Jeanne d’Arc gate was the last gate built in 1901. A route made for the bulwarks of the town is available at the tourism office Possibility to visit for groups all the year by booking at 03 83 64 90 60 or by mail at groupe@tourisme-terrestouloises.com
