THE SAINT ETIENNE CATHEDRAL AND ITS CLOISTER

About

Construction of Saint Etienne cathedral, with a Roman plan and Gothic architecture, began in 1221 and was completed in around 1500. The cathedral is the symbol of the rich past of Toul. Its flamboyant façade, the richest part of the building, contrasts with the Rayonnant Gothic austerity which predominates in the rest of the building. The cloister was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Measuring 54m by 42m, it is one of the largest in France. An interesting series of gargoyles completes the whole. It is possible to go up the towers in summer.

The Cathedral is on the "Toul la Médiévale" discovery itinerary which is a tour to follow with a leaflet, on sale at the Tourist office (€0.80), or with a smartphone or tablet with a free application. (Click to find out more)
